The internet on my phone is so slow. But that makes sense; with over 240 Million mobile internet users in India we’re all sharing what little bandwidth is available.
I can think of three ways to increase the speed of your internet.
1) Pay for a faster 3G or Wifi package (no thank you!).
2) Buy a more powerful phone so pages render quicker (not actually faster internet).
3) Use a mobile optimised browser that can double your internet speeds.
The third option is interesting because it’s free, doesn’t require a faster connection or faster phone. It’s a method that takes what you already have and squeezes the most out of it.
But does it actually work?
I wanted to run a test of the default Android browser (usually just called ‘Internet’) and the mobile optimised Opera Mini browser.
To do this I created a basic webpage (just text and images) that was 566KB in size. I then loaded this page on my phone (Samsung S3) on my 3G internet connection.

Now I used the Opera Mini Browser to load the same page, on the same 3G connection, on the same phone (after deleting all cache, cookies and stored internet files).

How Did Opera Mini Increase
My Internet Speed By 56.1%?!

It didn’t.
That’s the clever thing.
My download speeds are exactly the same as before but Opera Mini does two things to create faster speeds.

1) It caches web pages on it’s server.

- This means that popular websites are already stored on the Opera servers. Opera has servers all around the world. So instead of your request going half way around the world, and then your data travelling thousands of miles … now it just comes from a local server much closer. Much faster.

2) It COMPRESSES webpages.

- Opera Mini compresses websites before delivering them to your phone. It reduces image sizes, removes unnecessary elements, strips out adverts and stops video from auto-playing. So in Opera Mini the website you load can be many many times smaller than the exact same website on a different browser. This is the secret to faster internet – simply download less data!

• Use less data (perfect if you pay per MB or have limited quota)
